'16 Volume X, Number 3 The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics February 14, 1990 NCS5M Students Win In Art of Science Contest Two NCSSM students, Sanjeev Patel and Sergio Miranda, have been naiied winners in the 1990 Art of Science contest. Patel's entry, an electrical circuit board etching titled "The Huwan Circuit Systee", won first place in the contest. This is the first tiwe in the contest's four-year history that an NCSSM student has received this honor. As part of his award, Patel and his faiiily will be able to attend the opening of the exhibit in New York on April 24. Patel got the idea for his design froii Joe Liles, one of NCSSM's art instructors. Liles suggested that he do a representation of the huun nervous systee, and Patel decided to eake a collage of different ieages dealing with that subject. To Make his design, Patel used a photographic silkscreen to screenprint an iwage in ink on a copper-coated liMinate sheet. The sheet was exposed to an acid bath which eats dway at the unprotected cop per. The ink was then cleaned off the rewaining copper to expose the ieage underneath. To produce the colors in his iwage, Patel painted on the back of the plastic lae- inate board. Miranda's entry was a pinhole photograph of hieself on the 2nd Bryan cheeistry floor titled "Self Portrait*. He received a $500 award for his work, and is currently waiting for a Merit award which will allow hiw to go to New York in the spring. Pinhole photography involves placing file or photographic paper inside a cardboard box opposite a pinhole punched in one of • the box's sides. Light enters ' through the pinhole and proj ects an ieage onto the paper or file, which is then devel oped in the darkrooH as usual. Miranda got the idea for his entry froM a pinhole photography sewinar which X I' r \ ■r Liles had early in the year. He says wore NCSSM students should get involved in “artsy" activities to balance their exposure to science and Math. Every year, interested and talented students nation wide spend two to three Months during the fall preparing their artwork for the Art of Science cowpetition. In add ition to Patel and Miranda, NCSSM students Kasi Jackson and Julie Cheu subMitted en tries for the contest this year. When asked to conent on why NCSSM has had award win- Vie^ in this contest every year since it began, Joe Liles uid, "A student Must have a way of finding interconnect ions between art and science for this contest. Students at this school are unusually prone to do that." The Art of Science coep- etition is sponsored by the New York Acadewy of Science and the National Science foundation and is funded by Dow CheMical Cowpany. Safijeev Ratal (photo on right) and Sergio Miranda (photo on left) were winners in The Art of Science Contest, King Honored by Beth Crawford On January 15, the HaraMbee Club presented an asseMbly in the gym to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. King, a civil rights leader who ad vocated non-violerice, was assassinated in 1968 at the age of 39. Planning for the event began as early as October 5. As the asseMbly date drew closer, HaraMbee MCMbers split into groups to practice skits. These groups rehearsed on their own, but wet for joint practices on Thursday, Satur day, and Sunday. The assewbly consisted of several perforsances. These presentations illustrated proud MOMents in blacks' struggle for equality as well as dreaws for the future. The audience saw Rosa Parks refuse to give up her bus seat to a white Man. The North Carolina ‘ A(T students' sit-in at a Greensboro Woolworth store was reenacted. Darius Russell appeared as the first black president and Made an inspir ing speech. In the speech, he praised King for his beliefs and rewewbered the Man's acco- MplishMents. Greta Cokely, who organ ized the King assewbly, was pleased with the results. She observed that Most people had been open Minded about the asseMbly and stated that she had heard "no negative feed back.” Cokely expressed hope that the asseMbly would in spire in others the feelings which she has for King and his beliefs. Cokely reveres King for his non-violent Methods. She said, "It upsets mi to see what [Minorities] went through." The asseMbly's purpose was to infoTM students of the hardships that blacks overcawe in the past. Budget Cut by Lisa Senzel and NCSSM adMinistrators say the budget cut for third qu arter is no cause for panic. Because the state doesn't want to go in debt, the legislature had to cut back funding of state agencies. NCSSM's budget was cut 15.5 percent. North Carolina received less Money froM taxes than predicted. Also, daeage caused by Hurricane Hugo cost the state an unexpected 21.1 Million dollars. "[The budget cut] doesn't sesM to be putting a real Rachel Ferguson burden on anybody," said Dr. Taylor. "I'm optiwistic. . . that it's not going to dawage the prograM in any way." Teachers will have to justify each expenditure through a foreal request fore. Requests beyond the approved essentials way be turned down. SoMe teachers are deterwined to have supplies anyway. "I know a lot of teachers have been willing to [spend their own Money], but it's too early to tell [yet],* said Dr. Narshaw. Mission Outlined by Leighann Fake A Mission BtateMent should explain succinctly t4iere efforts should and should not be concentrated, "It serves to guide our efforts in setting goals, writing currieuluM, and evaluating our progress," Friedrick said. Based on the Mission statsHent, prograa goals are being written for Student Life, Acadewic Prograes, Out reach and General Prograes DevelopMent. The first draft of the Mission stateaent was wade at the retreat on August 15-16, 1969. Two discussion Meet ings, on NovBHber 30 and Dec- BMber 7, have resulted in a second draft.
